Confederates maintained camps nearby along the Middle Boggy River in the Choctaw Nation of Indian Territory. Some died of disease and were buried on the grounds where the museum now exists. The Battle of Middle Boggy was fought on February 13, 1864, when Col. William Phillips and 350 Union troops surprised about 90 Confederates where the Texas Road crossed the Middle Boggy River. Forty-seven Confederates were killed in the Union victory. The museum includes memorabilia from that Civil War battle. The grounds include a cemetery and a section of the Butterfield Mail Route. The Battle of Middle Boggy is reenacted every third year at a nearby site by the Oklahoma Historical Society and Atoka County Historical Society.
