As part of the Jean Lafitte National Historic Site and Preserve, the Chalmette Battlefield preserves and interprets the site of the 1815 Battle of New Orleans. Visitors can learn more about the battle and the War of 1812 at the Visitor Center or via a self-guided walking tour of the battlefield. In addition, they climb the Chalmette Monument, a 100-foot-high obelisk that honors those that fought in the battle, for panoramic views of the battlefield. Nearby, visitors can also see the Chalmette National Cemetery, where veterans of the War of 1812, Civil War, Spanish-American War, WWI, WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam War are interred.
