Sites in the French Quarter

This neighborhood, founded in 1718, is the epicenter of New Orleans history and culture. With a wealth of historic sites, restaurants, shops, and iconic architecture, and within walking distance from the InterContinental Hotel, the French Quarter is a must-see. The Cabildo

Built between 1795 and 1799 while New Orleans was under Spanish control, The Cabildo served as the administrative center of New Orleans's government until 1892. The Louisiana Purchase transfer ceremonies were held there in 1803, as well as early hearings of the landmark case Plessy v. Ferguson in 1892. Today the building houses the Louisiana State Museum, where you can see artifacts, paintings, and exhibits that tell the story of New Orleans.

This New Orleans landmark is one of the city’s most recognizable symbols. In the center of the French Quarter, the park has a bronze statue of Andrew Jackson and is surrounded by historic buildings.

The Hermann-Grima house offers a guided tour exploring the history of urban enslavement in New Orleans. The tour takes you through the National Historic Landmark designated 19th-century home. The property also includes the carriage house, which houses The Exchange Shop, one of the oldest women-led non-profits in the South.

The New Orleans Museum of Art houses an impressive collection of art in all mediums. Founded in 1910, the NOMA is New Orleans' oldest fine arts institution. The museum’s collection ranges from French Impressionism, pre-Columbian North, Central, and South American art, African art, and more. The 12-acre Besthoff Sculpture Garden is free and open to the public 7 days a week.

National WWII Museum

The National World War II Museum tells the story of the war on a global scale. The museum exhibits are organized thematically and portray WWII history through the perspectives of the men and women who experienced it. The collection contains over 250,000 artifacts, including WWII planes. The website offers full-day and half-day itineraries.

The Backstreet Museum immerses visitors in local New Orleans history. Learn more about the African and Native American influences on Mardi Gras, jazz funerals, and social aid clubs. This museum preserves community history and educates visitors on the city’s African American heritage.

The Southern Food and Beverage Museum is a nonprofit living history organization that celebrates the food culture of the American South. The Museum also offers cooking classes that visitors can buy tickets for in advance.

Old Ursuline Convent Museum

The Old Ursuline Convent Museum was erected in 1745, making it the oldest building in the Mississippi River Valley. The convent was occupied by Ursuline nuns until 1824, when it became an archbishop’s residence. The museum is now a Catholic cultural heritage center.
