Eyes of War: Modern Combat Photography

VIDEO | Visit the Rose Farm at Gettysburg National Military Park with Louie Palu, and hear about his experiences as a war photographer. Palu focuses on what it must have been like for Alexander Gardner as he photographed the aftermath of the Battle of Gettysburg in July, 1863. This video was created as part of the Eyes of War project, featuring three giants in the field of combat photography, whose work from the beaches of Normandy to the mountains of Kandahar has been seen by millions.

Palu is a Canadian documentary photographer and filmmaker known for covering social-political issues, including war and human rights. In addition to covering the war in Kandahar, Afghanistan for four years beginning in 2006, he also documented the drug war on the U.S.-Mexico border between 2011 and 2012 and the detention facilities at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. A 2019 Artist in Residence at Gettysburg National Military Park, in March 2020 he completed his 24th trip to the Arctic to document the Canadian military and local volunteers training in those extreme conditions.
