Battle of Third Winchester, 3:00-4:00pm

American Battlefield Trust’s map of the Battle of Third Winchester

A battery of Confederate horse artillery under Major James Breathed poured devastating fire into the right flank of the XIX Corps along Redbud Run. In the mid-afternoon, Brig. Gen. George Crook’s VIII Corps arrived on the Union right. Col. Joseph Thoburn’s division displaced the battery and joined the VI and XIX Corps divisions engaged since noon. The heaviest fighting of the battle raged across the Middle Field, the open ground between the First and Second Woods as Maj. Gen. John B. Gordon’s Confederates held fast around the Hackwood estate (the home still stands on private property). Union cavalry under Brig. Gen. Alfred T. A. Torbert took up a line on Crook’s right.
