Winter Quarters, a home listed on the National Register of Historic Places, stands today as a rare survivor of the ravages of the Civil War. During the Vicksburg campaign, Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's soldiers marched through northeast Louisiana, destroying everything not needed by the Union army. Of 14 plantation homes on Lake Saint Joseph, Winter Quarters was the only one to survive. The Nutt family were Union Sympathizers and were able to have their home spared and used as a Union headquarters as troops passed. Today, the home is filled with period furnishings and contains copies of diaries and other personal records from the Antebellum period.
