Designed by Thomas Jefferson, this officially became the capitol of the Confederacy May 21, 1861. The Congress of the Confederacy shared the building with the Virginia State Legislature from July 1861 to March 1865. In February 1862 Confederate President Jefferson Davis was inaugurated on the grounds of Capitol Square. A statue of Robert E. Lee and busts of Confederate heroes Stonewall Jackson, J.E.B. Stuart, Joseph E. Johnston, and Fitzhugh Lee, among others, are located here. Visitors are welcome to walk the grounds and tour the building.
