The house museum is located in a Federal style house (ca. 1808) that served as headquarters for Union Maj. Gen. David Hunter during the Battle of Lynchburg, June 17-18, 1864. During the war, Lynchburg was a vital Confederate rail depot and the location of a large hospital. Hunter advanced against Lynchburg in June 1864. John Breckinridge's troops arrived by rail. After a brief skirmish on June 18, Hunter -- short on supplies -- retreated into West Virginia. His retreat opened up the Shenandoah Valley for Jubal Early's advance into Maryland, threatening Washington, D.C.
