Both Union and Confederate armies camped on this 1,500 acre plantation. Confederate Cavalryman Lt. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest led a daring raid on the Union troops that occupied Oaklands on July 13, 1862, and he later accepted their surrender in the house -- followed by a dinner. House guest Confederate President Jefferson Davis stayed here while visiting his troops prior to the Battle of Stones River. Many other guests stayed in the house also. The back porch and back lawn were used to care for wounded soldiers.
