The Battle of Mansfield took place on April 8, 1864. Under the leadership of Gen. Richard Taylor, an army of fewer than 9,000 Confederate soldiers from Texas and Louisiana defeated 13,000 Union troops under Gen. Nathaniel Banks. The day after the Battle of Mansfield, on April 9, the fierce Battle of Pleasant Hill was fought, with both sides taking heavy losses and withdrawing from the field after dark.
