Brig. Gen. Edward Moody McCook arrived in Tallahassee on May 10, 1865, riding from Macon, Georgia, with two regiments of Union cavalry. He set up headquarters at the present-day Knott House and announced President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation on May 20, 1865.
