The Boston African American National Historic Site comprises historic buildings, which document the black community in Boston before the Civil War, including its role in the abolition of slavery in America and the Underground Railroad. The Robert Gould Shaw and 54th Regiment Memorial is also interpreted. The memorial commemorates Col. Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first African American regiment to be recruited from the North to fight in the Civil War. The regiment was recruited, trained, and received political support from the Boston community.
