In September 1862, Confederate Gen. Braxton Bragg led his Confederate offensive into Kentucky from Chattanooga, Tennessee, followed by Maj. Gen. Don Carlos Buell's Army of the Ohio. On September 14, Bragg's advance forces under Brig. Gen. James R. Chalmers met the solid resistance of Col. John T. Wilder's garrison troops at Fort Craig. The Union garrison guarded the strategic Louisville & Nashville Railroad and the location of the railroad bridge crossing the Green River at Munfordville. By September 17, the undermanned redoubt was surrendered to the Confederates, in an important blow to Union supply lines in the west.
