Like the other battles fought around Atlanta, the July 22, 1864, battlefield has been lost to development. Historical markers throughout the urban landscape point out key battle sites, including Bald (or Leggett's) Hill, Sherman's headquarters on Coppen Hill and the site of the Confederate breakthrough at the Troup Hurt House. Mortuary cannons mark the death sites of Generals James B. McPherson and William H.T. Walker. The battle is best understood by visiting the Civil War exhibit at the Atlanta History Center. Self-guided tours of battlefield sites in the city are available. Don't forget to visit Oakland Cemetery, where many notable Confederates are buried.
