2017 Civil War Trust Annual Photography Contest

Who can enter?

Anyone 13 years and older—worldwide—can enter the contest.  Employees, relatives of employees, and contractors of the Civil War Trust and the Contest Sponsors are allowed to enter the contest, but not eligible to win prizes.

The Basics of the Contest

Individuals may enter one photo per day (as determined by their email address) to the contest.

All photos entries to the Civil War Trust Photo Contest must be submitted via the contest platform that is managed through Wishpond and accessible through URL or Facebook.

The Entry Deadline

Submissions for the 2017 Civil War Trust “Your Visit to a Battlefield” Photo Contest are accepted between September 26, 2017 and October 13, 2017, 11:59 am. 

Winners will be announced on Facebook in November 2017.


Votes are accepted in the same time period as the entry period- September 26, 2017 and October 13, 2017, 11:59 am.  Users may cast 1 vote per day as determined by their email address. 

While the Wishpond platform will not accept votes from known fraudulent email domains, the Civil War Trust is not liable to remove or discount all fraudulent votes.

Any voting that occurs after the contest officially ends will not be counted.

Contest Awards

There will be 3 winners for the contest:

(2) “people’s choice” winners that are determined by the highest number of votes in the contest.

(1) A “staff favorite” that is separate from the “people’s choice” winners. The “staff favorite” will be selected by a team of employees from the Civil War Trust.

All (3)  winners will receive a Hiking Civil War Battlefields book, valued at $31.45 each. The Civil War Trust will cover the cost of shipping and handling. Winners will be notified in November 2017 via the email they provided with their contest submission. If we do not receive an email reply within one week, we will select another winner to receive the prize.

After contest winners are notified, they must provide a real name and mailing address to the Civil War Trust in order to receive the prize via mail. 

Entering photos in the contest

For photos to be considered for the Civil War Trust “Your Visit to a Battlefield” photo contest, entrants must submit their entry via the Wishpond tool. They must include their email address. This provides us with the entrant's contact information to ensure we can contact and update the potential winners, confirms entrants have read the Official Rules and secures permission to publish photos entered in the contest. Wishpond entries that cannot be matched to a registration form will not be eligible to win.

Individuals submitting photos must possess the full rights to their submitted photos. Photos including material of questionable ownership or questionable content may be excluded.

Individuals submitting photos retain full rights to their photos, including ownership, but through the act of participation (entering a photo into our contest and adding an appropriate caption) will grant to the Civil War Trust a non-exclusive, worldwide, irrevocable, royalty-free license to reproduce, distribute, and display the submitted photos and their captions in any format or medium in perpetuity.

The Trust reserves the right to eliminate and/or delete photographic submissions to our Wishpond Facebook tab or content that we deem to be objectionable or of dubious provenance. No prior warning or notification will be required of the Trust.

Types of photos that we would remove without warning:

- Photos that showcase dubious taste or themes

- Photos involving racial insensitivities

- Photos involving salacious subjects and presentations

- Photos that are unrelated to America’s battlegrounds and historic sites.

- Photos that do not contain subjects related to the theme

- The Civil War Trust will reserve the right to change or modify all text associated with a photo entered into the contest. This includes titles of the photo, accompanying descriptions, and tags

Photos need not have been taken in the year in which they are being submitted.

Civil War Trust Rights and Indemnifications

By entering the contest the participants agree to indemnify and hold harmless the Civil War Trust, its affiliates, employees, and officers from any issues, losses, or actions emanating from or in relation to the Civil War Trust photo contest. This would include any losses or issues related to third party claims of copyright infringement or violations of personal privacy.

By submitting photos to the “Your Visit to a Battlefield” photo contest, entrants give the Civil War Trust permission to use photos as described herein. Entrants understand that they may not be notified if and when their photo is used and that they will not be compensated for the usage. This permission is granted in perpetuity.

The “Your Visit to a Battlefield” photo contest is void where prohibited by law. Each participant is responsible for accurately titling and describing photos. The Civil War Trust, at its sole discretion, reserves the right to terminate, suspend, or modify the photo contest. If you have any questions, please contact web@civilwar.org.
