Hallowed Ground Magazine Wins Fifth Consecutive Apex Grand Award For Publication Excellence

Civil War Trust membership magazine also recognized by international Society of Publication Designers

(Washington, D.C.) - The Civil War Trust, the nation's largest nonprofit battlefield preservation organization, is pleased to announce that its membership magazine Hallowed Ground has again earned top honors for outstanding quality.  For the fifth consecutive year, it has received an APEX Grand Award - one of only 100 bestowed out of nearly than 2,400 entries in the international contest.  Of the 10 magazine titles to receive Grand Awards, Hallowed Ground was one of only four produced by small nonprofit organizations.

APEX 2013 - the 25th Annual Awards for Publication Excellence - is an international competition that recognizes outstanding publications from newsletters and magazines to annual reports and brochures.  In recognizing Hallowed Ground, the APEX committee focused on the publication's recent overhaul, overseen by editor Mary Koik and creative director Jeff Griffith.

In the word of the judges: "While the previous version was hard to quarrel with, the new magazine is a triumph of design and editorial. From the minimalist contents page - compelling with its sparing use of powerful photos - to the "˜From the Trenches' shorts, and on to the featured 'Success Stories' and full length historical features, each issue is a fascinating look back at our past and a look ahead to current conservation projects."

Hallowed Ground's redesign was also recognized this summer in a blog feature by the international Society of Publication Designers, which called the publication "a Civil War mag 150 years in the making" and praised its marriage of 19th and 21st century elements.
