The battles of the Civil War and other conflicts have been commemorated with monuments, memorials and markers honoring the soldiers and units who fought on these hallowed fields.  The Gettysburg battlefield, with more than 1,300 monuments alone, boasts the largest collections of outdoor sculpture in the world.  Following is some basic information about America’s battlefield monuments, including a selection of primary source speeches made at the time of the monument dedications.
