Saturday, July 1, 9:30 – 11:30 am, a PowerPoint Presentation on the Battle of Fort Stevens (July 11-12, 1864) will be held. The Battle of Fort Stevens was the only Civil War battle in the Nation’s Capital and the only time in the history of the United States that a sitting President (Lincoln) has ever come under direct enemy fire. A surgeon standing next to Lincoln was, in fact, shot and had Lincoln been hit or killed the course of the Civil War, the nation’s history would have drastically changed.
This program is free and will be held at the Rock Creek Park Nature Center (5200 Glover Rd NW, off Military Road) . It is a prelude to the commemoration of the 153rd anniversary of the battle, to be held on July 8.
