Support the creation of a Brandy Station and Cedar Mountain State Park

The Civil War was the defining moment in our nation’s history. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Culpeper County, Virginia, which bore witness to two of the most significant battles of the war.

The Battle of Cedar Mountain marked the first major clash in Culpeper — and was also its bloodiest. The Battle of Brandy Station, the opening engagement of the Gettysburg Campaign, was the largest cavalry battle ever fought in North America. The same fields later served as the setting for the largest-ever winter encampment of the Union Army of the Potomac.

In recent years, a series of successful public-private partnership efforts have led to the acquisition of about 1,400 acres of hallowed ground across these two battlefields. Representing some of the most marched on, fought over, and camped upon acreage of the entire Civil War, today this land provides a unique opportunity to create a new state park in the heart of the iconic Virginia Piedmont.

Such a park would help increase visitation to this breathtaking region of the Old Dominion, attracting history buffs and outdoor enthusiasts alike. In addition to highlighting the Commonwealth’s — and our nation’s — Civil War heritage, the park would provide countless recreational opportunities for nature lovers, its full potential further enhanced by its proximity to the Rappahannock and Rapidan Rivers. With many amenities already in place, including an extensive system of interpretive trails, as well as the active stewardship of the Brandy Station Foundation and the Friends of Cedar Mountain Battlefield, this exciting new destination park would be ready to open immediately.

We ask you to add your voice to the growing chorus calling for the creation of a Brandy Station and Cedar Mountain State Park that would preserve and promote these significant Civil War battlefields for generations to come. Please take a moment to sign and send a letter of support to the key decision makers in the Virginia General Assembly with the power to turn this proposal into a park and a lasting legacy.
