June 6, 2015
I’m here to tell you that you just made history! In June 2011, four years ago this month, the Civil War Trust — which would not exist but for you — kicked off an effort, unprecedented in the history of this country:
To raise $40 million by the end of the Sesquicentennial to save
as much hallowed ground as possible…
to create as much groundbreaking education content as possible…
and to push the boundaries of using technology to advance learning of the Civil War.
Well, we didn’t raise $40 million… we didn’t raise $50 million… I’m here to announce that you and your fellow Civil War Trust members all around the world have raised $52.5 million! This is an accomplishment that is unparalleled in our country’s history.
To help celebrate this wonderful victory, we’ve prepared a short video for you to remind us all what a great four-year effort this has been:
What does all of this mean? It means more than 10,000 acres saved in the past 48 months; it means education programs far beyond anything we imagined in 2011, and it means we are the technology leader in the American history arena, and we are only going to get better.
It means that the work you have done is the real and lasting contribution to the Sesquicentennial commemoration of the Civil War. Think about it… once all of the speeches, seminars and re-enactments are over… once all of the new books are put back onto the shelves… what remains? It’s the land… it is the 10,000 hallowed acres that you have saved that will stand forever as the real significant accomplishment of honoring those men who fought in this defining struggle.
But most important, it means that we are NOT done. We still have much more to do, saving hallowed ground from the Civil War and the Revolutionary War, and we look forward to bringing some exciting new ideas to the board in the coming months that will – once again – redefine battlefield preservation in America, and take this organization to ever greater levels of success.
One last thing: I just signed a new three-year contract, so I’m going to be with you every step of the way!
With gratitude, appreciation and awe,
