Developers are threatening a barrier island located in the Charleston Harbor.

But this isn't just any island… It's Morris Island.

Three years ago, a developer was denied development rights beyond those already placed on Morris Island by Charleston County. However, another developer has come along stating that development is inevitable and that he will develop the island right.

Development of Morris Island is not inevitable -- especially the high-density development being proposed by the current developer. Twenty units on the critically sensitive, historically important island is not the right way to develop this remote island.

Historical Facts:

  • Morris Island is the site of the famous Civil War battle portrayed in the movie "Glory".
  • Morris Island can be seen from Fort Sumter and currently looks as it did during the Civil War, 140 years ago.

Ecological Facts:

  • Morris Island is prone to severe erosion.
  • Morris Island is a beautiful sanctuary for wildlife, especially migratory birds.
  • Building groins for new residents of Morris Island will cause severe erosion of Folly Beach's precious sand.

Development Facts:

  • In order to preserve the island, Charleston County currently allows only 4 units on the entire 125 acres of the Island.
  • There is no access to or from the island except by boat.
  • This past fall, a developer submitted a plan to put over 20 multi-million dollar homes on the island. The plan was turned away by the Charleston County Planning Department.
  • In February, he applied for a state permit to allow 20 wells and septic tanks on 62 acres at Cummings Point.

He hasn't given up.
