Spotsylvania County Battlefields: Below are maps showing some of the most important battlefield properties in Spotsylvania County. The Civil War Preservation Trust, one of the groups in the Spotsylvania Battlefields Coalition, has identified these tracts as some of the most vulnerable battlegrounds in America.

Alrich Tract: Following is a map of the Alrich Tract, the scene of fighting during the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, May 12, 1864. The property (identified in pink) was the scene of a Union attack on Heth's Salient, a key point in the Confederate lines. A successful Confederate flank assault on the Union lines eliminated the threat to Heth's Salient.

In 1997, an agreement was signed by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, the Virginia Department of Transportation, and the National Park Service that would allow a bypass through the southern part of the Alrich property in exchange for protection of the northern part of the site. The Spotsylvania Battlefields Coalition is working with these agencies to make sure that happens.

Slaughter Pen Farm: Following is a map of the Slaughter Pen Farm, the scene of fighting during the Battle of Fredericksburg, December 13, 1862. Modern historians estimate that 5,000 soldiers in blue and gray shed their blood on this property (identified in pink). More people died on the property than those killed during the bombing of the Pentagon on September 11, 2001.

In early 2006, the Civil War Preservation Trust (CWPT) and Tricord Homes joined forces to place a contract on the Slaughter Pen Farm. The Spotsylvania Battlefields Coalition is working with CWPT to raise the $12 million necessary to save the farm from development.

Chancellorsville Success Story: Thanks to an unprecedented deal between Spotsylvania County, Tricord Homes, and the preservation community, 140 acres of the Mullins Farm (now known as the First Day of Chancellorsville Battlefield) have been protected from development. The deal showed conclusively what local citizens can accomplish when they work together for.
