Q.  In October 1861, at Carondelet, Missouri, this vessel became the first ironclad launched in the U. S. Navy.

A.  The USS St. Louis, later renamed the Baron de Kalb.  It sank after striking a mine (torpedo) on the Yazoo River in Mississippi, 1863.
