3rd Winchester Teacher Tour
October 15, 2010
On October 15th, CWPT's Educators, Garry Adelman and Nicole Osier, led a tour of the Third Winchester battlefield for local teachers. Adelman, who authored the text on all the battlefield's signposts, utilized his extensive knowledge and collection of Civil War era photography to provide participants with a more visceral appreciation of what they saw. The group -- ten teachers in all -- was hosted and coordinated by Betty McCormick, a teacher at Redbud Run Elementary School and 2010 Teacher Institute attendee.
The Third Winchester battlefield is located just across the school parking lot of three Frederick County schools. The battlefield, while undiscovered by some has become a great resource for others. Many of the local teachers have used the battlefield for history lessons, scientific research, and even athletic practice.
The tour was held to increase awareness of this great resource while allowing CWPT an opportunity to meet some of the local teachers who have been using the site. The tour offered great insight into the battle’s history, a chance to discuss general Civil War history, and an occasion to talk as a group about many of the educational resources offered by the Trust. With great weather and exceptional company, everyone involved had a wonderful experience.
