Answers to Trivia from the Archives
Thomas was born in the small town of Newsoms, Virginia (then called Newsom's Depot). He attended the US Military Academy, fought in the Mexican-American War, and married a Northern Woman before Virginia seceeded in 1861. Unlike many Southern officers, Thomas refused to resign his commission, and remained loyal to the Union. Although he went on to achieve great distinction in the Western Theater, his relationship with his family was destroyed. His sisters disowned him; they turned his portrait around to face the wall and refused to speak to him again or attend his funeral.
