Answers to Trivia from the Archives

February 2012

Q. What does the S in Ulysses S. Grant stand for?

A. Nothing! Ulysses S. Grant was actually born Hiram Ulysses Grant.  It became 'Ulysses S.' as a result of a clerical error when he arrived at West Point, and it stuck.  Simpson is his mother's maiden name, but Grant was known to have said that the S. stood for nothing at all.
