U.S. Grant to Gen. Buckner
February 16, 1862
The following is in reply to a note sent by Gen. Buckner, the commanding officer inside Fort Donelson, to Gen. Grant, appealing for an armistice and terms for surrender.
Sir: Yours of this date proposing Armistice, and appointment of Commissioners, to settle terms of Capitulation is just received. No terms except unconditional and immediate surrender can be accepted.
I propose to move immediately upon your works.
