Below is a 'Pictorial Envelope' made in honor of Senator Edward Dickinson Baker of Oregon, who died at the Battle of Ball's Bluff in Loudon County, Virginia on October 21, 1861. Baker, a friend of Abraham Lincoln's from his time in Illinois, was the only sitting United States Senator killed in action during the Civil War.
