Windsor Ruins

Natchez, MS, USA

The Windsor Ruins are located near the abandoned town of Bruinsburg, where Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's army crossed the Mississippi River from April 30-May 1, 1863, to begin the campaign for the capture of Vicksburg. The mansion was located along the route of Grant's army on its march inland toward Jackson. Union troops used the mansion as a hopsital during the Civil War and so it was spared from burning.  However, Windsor burned down due to an accidental fire in 1890.
