Port Republic Battlefield

8691 Water Street, Port Republic, VA 24471, USA

On June 9, 1862, in the last battle of Stonewall Jackson's Valley campaign, the Stonewall Brigade was repulsed after an unsupported attack against Union positions held at Port Republic by Gen. James Shields. After Confederate reinforcements arrived, thwarting a Federal counterattack, Gen. Richard Taylor's "Louisiana Tigers" relentlessly assaulted the formidable artillery position, forcing Shields to retreat and leaving Jackson in control of the Upper Valley.
