La Cite De La Mer

Octeville, Cherbourg-Octeville, France

This is the Civil War Discovery Trail's first site outside of the United States. The museum opened in 2002 and chronicles the nautical history of the Cotentin region. On display is a cannon and other artifacts from the CSS Alabama, which sank 12 miles offshore on June 19, 1864, after battling the USS Kearsarge. The Civil War Trust dedicated a plaque honoring the battle at La Cite de la Mer Museum in 2004.
