Hatcher's Run Battlefield

Petersburg, VA, USA

February 5-7, 1865, saw about 14,000 Rebels hold off a force of more than 34,000 Union troops in what had been an attempt as part of Gen. U.S. Grant's winter offensive to intercept Confederate supply trains. Although the Federals did not achieve their goal, they were then able to extend their line of entrenchments to the Vaughan Road Crossing of Hatcher's Run. This put them 3 miles closer to the Southside Railroad and tightened the vice around the Army of Northern Virginia.
