Fort Branch

2883 Fort Branch Road, Oak City, NC 27857, USA

Located on Rainbow Bluff and overlooking the Roanoke River, Fort Branch protected Roanoke River Valley farms and the Weldon Railroad bridge (which was critical to the Army of Northern Virginia for recieving supplies) from destruction by Federal gunboats. Fort Branch also protected the construction site of the CSS Albemarle at Edward's Ferry, a key in the Confederacy's effort in regaining control of the Atlantic coast. The fort features seven of the eleven original cannons on site and well-preserved earthworks.

Directions

From I-95 take exit 138 at Rocky Mount; follow U.S. 64 east to Robersonville and take North Carolina 903 north; 0.5 mile south of Hamilton, turn right on the Fort Branch Road and go 2 miles. The site is on your left.

Regular Events

First full weekend in November: annual battle reenactment weekend, first Saturday in December: Fort Branch Christmas

Free, except on reenactment weekend: $5.00/vehicle, $10.00/bus or fifteen-passenger van.
