First Day at Chancellorsville Battlefield

9001 Plank Road, Chancellor, VA 22553, USA  | More on: Chancellorsville »

The First Day at Chancellorsville Battlefield is the site of the opening clash of this famous battle, fought on May 1, 1863. The battle pitted the leading elements of Confederate General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia and Union General Joseph Hooker's Army of the Potomac. After several hours of fighting in the clearings along the Orange Turnpike, Hooker withdrew his forces, leaving the battlefield - and the initiative - in the hands of the Gray Fox, Lee. Lee's army would not relinquish the initiative until two months later in a small Pennsylvania town known as Gettysburg.
