Cross Keys Battlefield

Harrisonburg, VA, USA

In pursuit of Stonewall Jackson's army, U.S. General Fremont encountered the division of C.S.A. Maj. Gen. Ewell on June 8, 1862, which had been charged by Jackson with blocking Fremont's advance. After an artillery duel and infantry attacks made in vain, Fremont pulled back, allowing Ewell to slip across the Shenandoah River, burning the bridge behind him and aiding the balance of Jackson's command in defeating Federal forces at nearby Port Republic.
