Under the cover of darkness, 1,000 cavalrymen of Confederate Gen. Jo Shelby's "Iron Brigade," along with an artillery battery of four ten-pounder Parrott guns, formed a battle line 200 yards from the anchored Queen City. At 4:00 a.m. Shelby attacked and after twenty minutes of intense fire, captured the vessel and the crew.

Directions

From I-40 take the Brinkley exit. Travel south through Brinkley on Highway 49. Two miles into Brinkley, Highway 49 and 70 merge, continue south/ southwest on Highway 70 for 5 miles; turn south on Highway 17 and travel for 10 miles. Turn west at the intersection of Highway 17 and Highway 79 and follow Highway 79 for 3 miles into Clarendon.
