Cedar Mountain Battlefield

Culpeper, VA 22701, USA

On August 9, 1862, numerically superior Confederates under "Stonewall" Jackson nearly suffered defeat at the hands of a small Union force commanded by Maj. Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks until a counterattack by Maj. Gen. A.P. Hill's division led the Southerners to victory. Success here, at what is considered the first battle of the Second Manassas Campaign, gave the Army of Northern Virginia the initiative and pushed the war north from Richmond.
