Bermuda Hundred Campaign Tour

10201 Iron Bridge Road, Chesterfield, VA 23832, USA

In 1864, Union Gen. Benjamin F. Butler landed the Army of the James on the Bermuda Hundred peninsula in an attempt to secure a base of operations and then advance to Richmond. After tentative forward advances, he fell back to a defensive posistion at Bermuda Hundred. On May 16, The Battle of Drewry's Bluff halted Butler's greatest attempt to move forward. As Butler retreated, he was followed by the Confederates who began to dig their own entrenchments, preventing Butler from making direct threats to Richmond. Confederate and Union troops faced each other in these trenches for the remainder of the war.
