Battle Of Westport

The Battle of Westport, fought October 21-23, was the largest battle west of the Mississippi River and the decisive battle of Confederate Gen. Stirling Price's 1864 Missouri campaign. Directions guide the visitor to the first of twenty-five narrative markers on a 32-mile, self-guided automobile tour and a self-guided walking tour of Byram's Ford and the Big Blue Battlefield. Each marker provides directions to the next stop on the tour. A written brochure is available from the Battle of Westport Visitor Center. Tour brochures are also available at Wornall House Museum, 146 West Terrace; and Harris Kearney House, 4000 Baltimore.

Directions

For the first marker: From I-70 take I-435 south, then west; or take I-470 west to I-435. Exit State Line Road north. Proceed north to 43rd Avenue. Travel east on 43rd Avenue to Westport Road and Tour Stop 1, at the northeast corner of Westport Road and Broadway. For the Visitors Center: From the I-435, take Hwy. 71 North. Take exit 188 and turn right onto E Meyer Blvd, continue straight, go around the fountain and go through the gates on the opposite side of the intersection. The visitors center will be on the right.
