Battle of Athens State Historic Site

Athens, Grant, MO 63465, USA

This is the site of the northernmost Civil War battle west of the Mississippi. Union home guardsmen defeated southern Missouri state guard forces here on August 5, 1861. Thome-Benning House (open to the public) was struck by Southern artillery fire during the battle and has since been known as the "Cannonball House."

From I-70: take State Highway 61 (Wentzville) exit (exit 210); proceed north on Highway 61 approximately 135 miles to State Highway 81 at Canton; proceed north on Highway 81 for approximately 40 miles to Highway CC. Follow Highway CC east 4 miles to Athens.

Regular Events

Every three years in August, major Civil War reenactment of the battle; Spring and Christmas, Open house; November, Veteran's Day Observance and Open House.
