Averasboro Battlefield

3300 Highway 82, Dunn, NC 28334, USA

This is the site of the 1865 Battle of Averasboro, where the outnumbered and outgunned Confederates of General Hardee's corps delayed the left wing of Gen. W.T. Sherman's army advance north from Fayetteville. The Battle of Averasboro was fought on the 8,000-acre Smithville Plantation along the Cape Fear River, March 15-16, 1865. The delay enabled the relocation of additional Confederates for Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's final offensive of the war at the Battle of Bentonville, fought 25 miles to the north on March 19-21, 1865.
