Appomattox Court House National Historical Park

After the battles of Appomattox Station on April 8, 1865, and Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, General Lee met General Grant at the home of Wilmer McLean and surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia--signaling the beginning of the end of the Civil War. Surrender ceremony events took place over the next three days, ending with the Confederate infantry stacking their arms on April 12.

Directions

Located on VA Route 24, 2 miles northeast from the town of Appomattox. From I 81: Take exit 143 south onto I 581/ Hwy 220 into Roanoke, VA. Take exit 4E onto Hwy 460 East and continue for about 70 miles. Take the VA 24/131 exit (Old Courthouse Rd) and turn left onto VA 24. After approximately 2 miles, turn left onto George Peers Dr. Visitors Center will be on the left. From Richmond: Take Hwy 360 West about 30 miles. Turn slight right onto VA 307 W/ Holly Farms Rd. After about 9 miles, it becomes US 460 W/ Prince Edward Hwy. Proceed another 35 miles, and turn right (northeast) onto VA-24. After 2 miles, turn left onto George Peers Dr.

15-minute video shows at the top and bottom of every hour. Living History programs Memorial Day to Labor Day. Special programs on the Anniversary dates.

Signs, trails, rangers, living history, slide programs, displays, electric map, museum.

Admission Fee

$10.00 per vehicle; $5.00 per motorcycle. Admission is free as of October 1, 2016.

Hours

Visitor Center: 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. daily. Closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years Day, and Martin Luther King Jr Day.
