Alabama State Capitol

600 Dexter Avenue, Montgomery, AL 36130, USA

Completed in 1851, this National Historic Landmark is a museum of state history and politics. Additions to the building were made several times. The Capitol was restored in 1992. The Confederacy began in the original Senate chamber and the Selma to Montgomery 1965 Voting Rights March ended on the street in front of the building. Today, the governor and other executive branch officers still occupy offices in the Capitol.

Directions

Located in Montgomery's Heritage District, the Alabama State Capitol is at the eastern end of Dexter Avenue, bounded by Bainbridge, Monroe, Union, and Washington Streets.

Visitor Services

Restrooms, handicapped access, the Goat Hill Gift Shop, and beverages are available at the Union Street entrance to the Capitol which is at street level. Elevators run between floors.

Regular Events

All historic rooms and displays in the Old Supreme Court Library can be seen by visitors during public hours.

Available Interpretation

All visitors may take self-guided tours Mondays-Fridays, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Guided tours are available at the Union Street entrance on Saturdays at 9, 11, 1, and 3. (No self-guided tours on Saturdays.) By making prior arrangements, guided tours can be scheduled during the week (Monday through Friday) for groups of 15 or more. Call the Capitol Tour Office to obtain more information and schedule a tour.
