Alabama Department of Archives and History

Located across the street from the state capitol, which served as the provisional capitol of the Confederate States of America, the museum and archives contain the largest collection of Civil War materials in the state. Significant among these is the department's collection of Civil War flags, which are displayed on a rotational basis.

From I-85 south exit right on S Union Street. Turn left a third traffic light (Washington Avenue). From Birmingham or Mobile on I-65, take interstate to I-85 north; exit right onto Court Street. Stay on service road. At the seventh traffic light, turn left (Union Street). Turn left at the fourth traffic light (Washington Avenue).

Museum Open: Monday- Saturday: 8:00 A.M.-4:00 P.M.; Research Room Open: Tuesday, Friday and 2nd Saturdays: 8:30 A.M.-4:30 P.M. Close State Holidays. NOTICE: Museum closed for renovations May18-August 19, 2013. Archives and Research Room open during construction. Please contact the Department of Archives and History for more information.
