Pickett's Mill - May 27, 1864

Battle of Pickett's Mill
May 27, 1864

Stopped in his tracks at New Hope Church, Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman determined to circumvent Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's army by sending Maj. Gen. Oliver O. Howard's corps on a flanking mission around the Confederate right.  After trekking through rugged terrain, Howard's men found the Rebels entrenched.  On the afternoon of May 27, 1864, Howard ordered an assault against the Confederate works that was bloodily repulsed.
