Peach Tree Creek - July 20, 1864

Battle of Peach Tree Creek
July 20, 1864

Weary of Joseph E. Johnston's pattern of retreat throughout Georgia, Confederate president Jefferson Davis removed Johnston from command of the Army of Tennessee, replacing him with Lt. Gen. John Bell Hood. On July 20, 1864, Hood determined to take the fight to the enemy by setting up an isolated portion of Gen. William T. Sherman's forces in front of Atlanta. Despite catching the Federal off guard, Hood's sortie lacked coordination. Quick reacting Yankees were able to stave off their Confederate attackers and further secure their position in front of Atlanta.
