Dear Civil War Preservationist,

The past 12 months marked an exciting year for battlefield preservation. Thanks to the generosity of our members, the Civil War Trust has now saved more than 38,500 acres of critical battlefield land – some of the most blood-soaked ground in America. This is truly an astounding accomplishment, and with your help this year will be another triumphant year for the battlefield preservation movement.

Please help us build on this momentum and fight for the future of battlefield preservation by joining my "Battlefield Brigade!" I urge each and every one of you to contact your U.S. Senators and Member of Congress, telling them to support full federal funding for the Civil War Battlefield Preservation Program in FY2015. This federal program is essential to our preservation efforts since it matches every dollar we raise – at least doubling the value of your donation.

Want a prime example? Just look at our latest opportunity to save 45 crucial acres at South Mountain. Nearly surrounded by previously preserved battlefield land, this 45-acre target is the "hole in the donut" for the September 1862 battle. This piece of battlefield has been one of my top priorities for a long time, and as much as 75% of its purchase price (upwards of $300,000) will be funded from federal matching grants IF we can raise $112,500. And friends, I know we can!

So, while we are all bundled up in layers this winter, enjoying the benefits of technology to keep warm, remember the soldiers in blue and gray who struggled against the elements as well as each other for four long years during the Civil War. You will no doubt be inspired, as I always am, to call Congress in support of battlefield preservation, and join the effort to save hallowed ground at South Mountain!
