From Our President

Jim Lighthizer Photo

December 2009
Dear Civil War Preservationist,

With Christmas and the winter holidays upon us it's natural to look back upon the year now almost completed. At the start of the year, our nation was clearly in the grip of one of the most wrenching recessions that we have ever faced. Unemployment was soaring; the financial system teetered on the brink of ruin - not the most optimal fundraising environment you might agree!

But despite the tall odds, 2009 may prove to be one of CWPT's best years ever. Rather than curl into a ball, we decided to tighten our belt and continue forth with our mission of saving our endangered Civil War battlefields. And with the help of our loyal and redoubtable members, we saved battlefield land at Davis Bridge, Trevilian Station, Raymond, Third Winchester, and actively working to save more at Chancellorsville, The Wilderness, Appomattox Station, and now Malvern Hill. That would be almost 2,700 acres of newly saved land, just this year!

I know that many of you made significant contributions to our various campaigns this year and I thank you with all my heart. We should all be proud of our accomplishments this year.

- Jim Lighthizer, CWPT President
