Save Gaines' Mill

The Civil War Trust has just announced a new campaign to save 285 acres of the Gaines' Mill battlefield. This land comprises the right flank of the Confederate line that attacked the Union lines on June 27, 1862, in what may be the largest assault of the American Civil War. Now we have the chance to save this historic land. See our history articles, videos, photo gallery, and more.

Dear Civil War Preservationist,

Thanks to many of you, the Civil War Trust has been successful in saving significant portions of the Glendale and Malvern Hill battlefields outside of Richmond. But one battlefield in that region, the largest battle of the Seven Days Campaign, has stubbornly resisted our efforts to save it -- Gaines' Mill. Well I am proud to announce that we've had a breakthrough at this key 1862 battlefield. We now have an opportunity to save 285 acres of this important battlefield.

It was Robert E. Lee's first Civil War victory. It was maybe the largest assault of the Civil War. And at its time it was the second bloodiest battle in American history. Saving this 285-acre tract at Gaines' Mill will dramatically expand the preserved portion of the battlefield (by almost 400%) and will hopefully set in motion other opportunities that will allow us to add Gaines' Mill to the saved column. So if you can, please consider helping us save this new "Longstreet Attacks" tract at Gaines' Mill. With this important preservation breakthrough before us, it's now up to us to follow through on what will undoubtedly be one of our finest accomplishments as an organization.

- Jim Lighthizer, Civil War Trust President
