July 2011
Dear Civil War Preservationist,

On July 21, 2011 we commemorated the 150th anniversary of the Battle of First Manassas. As we know, this first major battle of the American Civil War was just the beginning of an epic four year struggle that would generate more than 1 million dead and wounded – a staggering human toll to consider and remember.

We at the Civil War Trust strongly believe that one of the best ways to remember and to commemorate the sacrifices of the Civil War generation is to save the very ground where soldiers from both the North and South fought and died. Just this month we announced a new campaign to save 44 unprotected acres at the very center of the Manassas National Battlefield. As you consider the tremendous history of the American Civil War I hope that you will join us in our efforts to save this land at Manassas and at the countless other Civil War battlefields throughout the United States.

- Jim Lighthizer, Civil War Trust President
